A 4-day double gorilla trekking tour in Rwanda involves two days of trekking mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, typically tracking two different families, with travel and potentially cultural activities or city tours included. The itinerary includes arrival in Kigali, transfer to Volcanoes National Park, the first gorilla trek, the second gorilla trek, and a return transfer to Kigali for departure, with optional activities such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center or the Ibyi’wacu Cultural Village.
Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc National des Volcans (PNV), is a renowned Rwandan national park famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas. The park is located in the northwest of Rwanda, covering 160 km² of rainforest across five of the eight Virunga Mountains.
Mountain gorilla trekking: This is the park’s premier activity, offering a unique opportunity to observe rare mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The experience is highly regulated to protect the animals, with a limited number of permits available each day.
Golden monkey trekking: Track playful troops of golden monkeys through the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes.
Volcano hiking: Explore the five volcanoes that lie within the park’s boundaries:
Mount Bisoke: A popular, challenging day hike that leads to a beautiful crater lake at the summit.
Mount Karisimbi: A more challenging, two-day trek to the highest of the Virunga volcanoes.
Mount Muhabura: A difficult day hike rewarded with stunning views of the Virunga range and nearby lakes.
Dian Fossey grave site hike: Hike to the Karisoke Research Center, founded by primatologist Dian Fossey, to learn about her groundbreaking work with mountain gorillas and pay respects at her grave.
Cultural tours: Engage with the local communities at the Gorilla Guardian’s Village (Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village) to learn about traditional Rwandan culture through music, dance, and storytelling.
Twin Lakes visit: Explore the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, which are located just outside the park.
Bird watching: With over 200 bird species, including many Albertine Rift endemics, the park is an excellent destination for bird enthusiasts.
The best time to visit Uganda is from June to August and December to February, which are the Dry seasons. Wildlife viewing is at its peak then. Primate walks in the forest are a big part of any safari in Uganda. The habitat of rainforests is, by default, very wet, and you can’t avoid rain completely. However, after heavy rain, the skies often open up to bright sunshine.
Uganda is a safe country to visit, especially when your part of an organized game drive with private guides, as you will be with us. These tours are designed to enhance your safety and provide you with a well-guided experience. There are, of course, some places to avoid in big cities like Kampala or Entebbe. But – as with everywhere else in the world – you’ll be fine by taking some precautions. Just some examples to be on the safe side, pun intended, don’t explore the city at night without a driver or guide, keep your valuables close to you, avoid wearing prominent and visible jewelry, and leave some things like passports in the hotel safe.
